Fishing Report 18/09/2024

As at 1:30pm on 18/09/2024, the Tongariro is sitting at a nice 35cumecs. The fishing since the heavy rain a few days ago, has sparked some excellent fishing on all local rivers and streams

Our guide days are proving very rewarding, well in to the double figures of good quality fish are being landed.

As the warmer weather comes, and the surface activity begins, we have switched tactics to a lot of dry/dropper fishing in the shallower and faster water to great success. Even picking up a few on the dry fly, specifically Adams Parachute, or the Cat3 Churnobyl UV Black.

The Dropper fly I have found working well, is the Cat3 101 or Cat3 Red FlashBack Pheasant Tail. Or any small Hare and Copper variation.

Classic Tongariro indicator nymphing is as always, still working well in the deeper water. Remember to use a nice and heavy bomb, to get an egg down deep. I recommend Jason's Rainbow Raider as a great bomb, and fish catcher. We can tie these on order if there aren't any in stock.

Jasons' Rainbow Raider Fly #08

We have found targeting the tails of pools, or any shallow and faster water has been far more productive, with less spooky fish, that are much more active. Doing this with a light indicator rig or dry/dropper works well.

The smaller rivers around Taupo are still excellent, with the runs showing now sign of slowing down. There are still good numbers anywhere you chose to fish. Feel free to come in and see us for more info.

With some more scattered rain throughout the week, this should keep the ball rolling for a while yet. Bring on the new season!
