The Orvis Encounter Package (rod, reel and line), easily wins the staff choice award. For its unmatched performance (in its price category), and after sale support.
I, myself have been using one of the first Orvis Encounter Rods (9FT #5) for a fair few years now, and to say I am impressed with it is an understatement. The Diversity, durability and support is superior to most brands I have used. I've never once broken a section, or lost a guide (and I don't consider myself gentle on gear), which has been very impressive. Although if you were to damage it, the turn around on sections and repair is far superior to other high end brands in NZ. Also working in the shop. I have found Orvis to be great with warranties in NZ, which for me, is a big factor when purchasing fly fishing gear.
Hooked up to a nice Brown in a small stream, around Otago. Using the 9ft #5 Orvis Encounter.
The action of the rod, is described as medium- fast action. I would put it on the faster side of medium- fast, as I find an oversized line would load the rod easier, and I found it to have far more power and control once I did this.
With the 5 weight model, I was throwing heavy nymph rigs, and streamers with ease. Normally I would use a #6 for the heavy jobs, but I found the Encounter rod would handle them well.
The only short-coming to this combo, like any combo kit, is the flyline. When it comes to casting performance and life span, fly-lines are arguably the most important part of any rod set up.
Although, the line Orvis provides, still certainly does the job well, you'll notice a big difference when you are eventually forced to buy a new fly line. I recommend the Airflo Power Taper, or the S/A MPX lines.
The encounter reel that is provided, is a simple, low maintenance plastic reel, with a smooth drag that is easily adjustable. I never had any issues with its performance over the years.
To conclude, the Orvis Encounter Kit is an incredible value combo, which far exceeds other rods that double the price. Would be perfect as a back up, or for someone who is less phased about high end gear, and just wants something that does the job, and well. Come give it a try in store, or check it out online.
